Definition of Plaque and Calculus

Dental Plaque
Dental plaque,which is a bio film, is a firmly adherent mass of bacteria in a muco-polysaccharide matrix. It cannot be rinsed off but can be removed by brushing.It is the root of most dental evils.

Calculus
Calculus is the calcified deposit found on teeth(and other solid oral structures) and is formed by mineralization of plaque deposits.It can be subdivided in to,
  • Supragingival calculus
  • Subgingival calculus
